Tennis Month in Canada
June has been declared Tennis Month in Canada, and we’re certainly doing our part here in SouthWest Region to add to the celebrations.
Starting at the Welland TC, the June 1st weekend will gather boys and girls for U12 and U14 Transition Tour events, with as many as 64 players being expected for a rollicking weekend.. This will be followed by the Rose City Classic on June 10-16, a historic tournament with five events for men and women.
In both St Davids and Pelham, players are forging new connections with singles matches in World Tennis Number box ladders.
Meanwhile, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, there’s a Rising Stars for boys U10 at White Oaks on June 2, and an U12 Rookie event at NOTL TC on June 9. Then on June 17-21, White Oaks will host the annual ITF Junior World Tour in memory of Bruno Agostinelli Jr. This is a great spectator event.
On June 29, coach Michaela Rivett is hosting a First Set TRY event at White Oaks. This is a great opportunity for kids to explore tennis at the start of their summer holidays.
June 18th will see the ground-breaking for the new St Catharines Tennis Centre in historic Merritton. The long-awaited four court facility will be ready for the 2025 outdoor season.
The St Catharines Public Library has initiated a Game-Set-Match program whereby patrons can borrow a pair of racquets and tennis balls for a week, using their library card. So far, there’s a waitlist for them through to the end of Tennis Month.
The Grimsby TC will host the second of its five OTA events on June 22-23, and this time it’s the U10 Rising Stars.
The beautiful courts at Hillfield-Strathallan College in Hamilton are filled with ACE-managed activity all month, starting with an U16 Provincial Circuit event and an U9 Rising Stars event on the June 1st weekend. This is followed by an U12 Provincial Circuit and an U10 Rising Stars on June 7-9, an U9 Rising Stars on June 15-16, and another U10 Rising Stars along with an U12 NIKE Transition Tour on June 21-23
In the Ancaster neighbourhood of Hamilton, the annual Heritage Days Festival on June 15 will include an OTA Roadshow appearance at the Ancaster TC.
The Dundas TC will celebrate its 100th anniversary on the weekend of June 7-8. Friday evening is a fund-raiser gathering with silent auction, music and refreshments. Saturday will see a parade in the Dundas Driving Park, followed by festivities and lunch at the club. The Dundas Museum will highlight tennis and the club in a special exhibit opening in mid-June.
The Burlington TC is hosting an U12 and U14 Rookie tournament on June 1-2. And the club is reaching out to a local school in mid-month, with three days of tennis at Tom Thomson School on June 12-13-14. Bruce Cates has lined up volunteers to manage the day, and is grateful to ACE Tennis for the donation of racquets and balls.
At the Milton TC, the OTA Yonex U12 Selection #1 for girls wraps up on June 2, and the club will host the 2024 Yonex U12 and U16 Provincial Championships on June 24-30.
