In the 1880s – the earliest days of modern tennis – there was a beautiful resort hotel called Queens Royal, located on the shore of Lake Ontario in Niagara-on-the-Lake. On its grass tennis courts were played the Niagara International Tournament and the Canadian Open Championships, drawing the best players from North America and beyond.
The annual Davis Cup team competition was begun in 1900, and its origin has a little-known connection to those events.
After Canada won the Davis Cup in 2022, the trophy traveled across the country, making its final stop before the NBO in Niagara-on-the-Lake to commemorate that connection. It also celebrated a homecoming for Team Canada Captain, Frank Dancevic, who received the key-to-the-city of Niagara Falls.
This video tells some of the story.
