Dundas Tennis Club 100

June 8th brought blue skies and warm sunshine – just perfect for the grand celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Dundas Tennis Club.  Planning began right after Christmas and no detail was overlooked by an enthusiastic event committee led by co-presidents Deb Sylvester and Jennifer Godyn.

The club is situated in Dundas Driving Park, a most beautiful setting and a name that harkens back to much earlier times.  As such it was ideal for a parade to launch the day’s festivities.  An olden-days firetruck, convertibles with waving dignitaries, and happy strollers all made their way through the park to the tennis club.

A super-impressive feature was the “first ball” handled deftly by 100-year-old Betty Webster, a club member for much of the club’s history.  This was followed by speeches and presentations, then abundant food and refreshments and happy conversation.  Meanwhile, teaching pro Peter Patiakis kept the courts hopping with games for the kids.

A silent auction raised thousands of dollars for Routes Youth Centre and Dundas Community Services.

Jennifer Godyn researched the history of the club in 2014 for the 90th anniversary, and her lively account is attached here.  The Dundas Museum has prepared a retrospective in honour of the anniversary, and the display will be available for the remainder of the summer.

We’re fortunate to have at least four clubs in SWR which date back 100 years or more : Dundas, Milton, Welland and Rosedale.  Hamilton TC is also getting close.  The plan is have each of their stories archived in our Library section by the end of the year.
