Queenston Heights Tennis

Niagara Parks Commission is promising to bring back the popular sport of tennis to Queenston Heights in 2025.

David Adames, chief executive officer of the commission, said in an interview work is scheduled to begin this fall to upgrade the tennis courts at Queenston Heights. In addition to the four tennis courts that will be reconstructed, there will be four pickleball courts built, he said.

There are now five tennis courts in various degrees of deterioration, including one without a net. They are near the children’s play structure, splash pad and eating area.

Adames said workers will decommission the courts, which were built sometime in the 1950s, install the base in the fall and let the padding cure over the winter and in the spring. The final coating and lines will be painted for a scheduled spring 2025 opening.

“Tennis has been in Queenston Heights for about 100 years, since the 1920s,” said Adames. “The current courts are well past their life cycle. They are unplayable.”  The commission has had plans to renovate the courts, but didn’t have the necessary funds to start the project.  “We do now,” he said.

A tender had been issued, said Adames, and the capital cost is estimated to be $700,000.

The commission will also build a sun shelter for the public participating in tennis or pickleball. A fence will surround the courts, and another barrier will separate the pickleball and tennis courts, said Adames.
