Tennis Art

And everything that comes with it …

Among the many wonders of tennis are its endless spinoffs and surrounds. This came into focus recently in a Substack article by Ben Rothenberg regarding Eva Lys, a WTA player from Germany. Eva is very popular with fans and fellow players, along with 300,000 instagram followers. She’s quoted as saying: I was always telling my parents that the reason I want to play tennis is not only because of the tennis itself, it’s also everything that comes with it.

Beyond strategy and tactics, technique and fitness, the ‘everything’ can include fashion and style; travel, food, language and culture; commentary and opinion; entertaining and decor; personalities of every shape and flavour. Tennis provides abundant opportunity for curiosity and imagination.

This reminded us of the story from last year, when the Ancaster Tennis Club did a major refresh of its graphic design. Remember that story? The image was prompted by a church steeple, the winter bubble, a tennis ball and the rising sun. So what happened after that?

It turns out the basic graphic is a great inspiration for CANVA. Jerome Marrin did the original art the old-fashioned way, but has fun adapting it for seasonal promotions on social media with the help of this new online design assistant.

Are others in our SouthWest Region community enjoying creative projects inspired by tennis? If so, please pass them along. We’d love to share them and expand everyone’s enjoyment of tennis beyond the playing of the game.
