Saluting Grimsby Volunteers
The Grimsby Tennis Club recently took time to celebrate three longstanding members whose everyday dedication has helped shape the club for many years.
Thanks to outgoing club president Ron Mauro for sharing their stories. As you read them, are you reminded of players in your club who provide essential services like this? The Bruce Childs Awards are designed to turn a spotlight on volunteer contributions, to make sure these roles are never taken for granted. Thank you, Diane and Jennifer and Carlos!
DIANE PARK
- Long time member, at least 30 years
- Served 9 years on GTC Executive in late 90s in the role of Communications Director. This was a time when there weren’t computers and spreadsheets to rely on. Diane remembers running around town with posters and flyers. During this time Diane and another member arranged food and decorations for all events, in addition to maintaining the gardens around the clubhouse.
- Early Riser Program coordinator for over 10 years. A challenging task considering that communication with most Early Riser members did not involve email or computer. Registration for the program was done manually.
JENNIFER MCDONNELL
- Long time member, always willing and able to help out when help was needed
- Served on executive for four years filling the role of Program Director
- As Program Director was in charge of Leagues, Junior Program and Beginners Clinics. This involved a lot of liaising with the President, Club Pro, Jegysoft scheduler and Parents.
- Captain of Ladies League for past three years. Jenn saw room for improvement in the random picking of starting lineups, so took on the task of designing court assignments each week, based on relative experience levels.
CARLOS LOZANO
- Long time member, always ready to help
- Conducted Ball Machine mandatory training. This ensured consistency in how the machine was operated
- In charge of Ball Machine repair. This involved pre season, mid season and post season machine tune up, resulting in many trips to Silent Partner to drop off and pick up the machine and often times just to pick up parts.
- Carlos is self directed. He not only sees things that need repair, but he also volunteers to fix them. Such is the case when something is in need of a fresh coat of paint, or a wobbly picnic table needs bracing.
