Tennis Canada DSA

Tennis Canada’s Distinguished Service Awards were presented to 18 worthy recipients from across Canada this year, recognizing individuals and organizations making long-term contributions to the growth of tennis in Canada. Three from Ontario were honoured during an on-court ceremony at the National Bank Open on July 28th, and all have an impact here in SouthWest Region.

Gary Caron has an exhaustive and superb resumé as a leader of coaching development and club management. As he transitions from a full-time position at the Granite Club in Toronto, he’ll be spending more time at his home in Niagara. We’re grateful for his support of our SWR goal to encourage connections among all our coaches.

Sonya Zibin leads the Inter-County Tennis Association and is “everywhere” when volunteers are called for. Most of our Halton clubs have teams in the ICTA leagues – whether for Ladies, for 55+ or for Juniors, and new participants are always welcome.

But of these faces, the one most recognizable throughout SWR is that of Simon Burden. Simon drives the OTA National Bank Roadshow to clubs and events, bringing warmth and enthusiasm along with a truckload of gear and inflatables. It’s challenging work, but good humour and passion for the people are his hallmark. The Tennis Canada testimonial includes :

“Your passion for tennis and diverse professional background have brought valuable energy and innovation to the OTA. With over a decade of coaching experience and a rich career in entrepreneurship and early childhood education, you’ve seamlessly channeled your skills into strengthening grassroots programming and club support. Since joining the OTA as Clubstrong Manager in 2022, your impact has been both meaningful and inspiring.”

Simon is well-known at the Milton TC …. Burlington TC …. Aldershot TC …. Ancaster TC … Grimsby TC … St Catharines TC … Welland TC … and was the highlight of Tennis Day in Hamilton at Huntington Park. His smile and cheerfulness help amplify the efforts of volunteers working to provide positive experiences for their members, and it’s always deeply appreciated!
